Shell Scheme vs Space Only: Which Should You Choose?

When you book an exhibition, you usually choose between two options. The right one depends on your budget, your goals and how much you want the stand to say about your brand.

What is a shell scheme?

A shell scheme is a basic stand supplied by the organiser. It normally includes walls, a fascia with your name, flooring and a basic lighting and power allowance. Exactly what is included varies by show, so always read the exhibitor manual.

It suits first-time exhibitors, smaller budgets and shows where you simply need a presence. Its limitation is that your stand sits in a row of similar stands, so graphics and furniture must do the work of setting you apart.

What is space only?

Space only means you rent the bare floor and build what you want on it. You are responsible for the design, structure, flooring, power and approvals, within the organiser’s rules on height, safety and build times.

It suits brands that want a stronger presence, have products to demonstrate, or need meeting areas and storage. It takes more planning, so start early.

How to decide

  • Choose a shell scheme if speed and simplicity matter most.
  • Choose space only if the stand itself is part of your brand message.
  • Consider an upgraded shell scheme if you want more impact without a full custom build.

Either way, a clear message and well-prepared graphics make the biggest difference. See the AQ Dictionary for more exhibition terms.
